Welcome to Hannah Eats Vegan

Well, hello! And welcome to my latest endeavor, Hannah Eats Vegan. Thanks for stopping by.

Who am I?

My name is Hannah. I’m a fourth media student currently living in London, Ontario. I’ve been living a whole foods vegan lifestyle for about 11 months now! I love to eat, like, a lot. I also love music, writing, travel, and I have an unhealthy passion for dogs.

Why veganism?

Having been pescectarian/lenient vegetarian for nearly eight years, transitioning to veganism was not something I found particularly difficult. After my first year of university, I found myself in a deep state of feeling “anti-me” (that’s my term for essentially spirally between self-hatred and depression). After suffering through my second year, eating like shit and treating myself and others like shit, I knew I needed to change something. That summer, I began a journey towards overall health improvement. I began exercising (properly) and experimenting with different ways of preparing my favourite foods.

Over time, I realized that many of the “healthy” recipes I was creating were accidentally vegan. I’d already begun to cut out milk and cheese from my diet, so in January of 2016, I made the conscious decision of taking on an entirely whole foods vegan lifestyle. Now, initially my choice was based on health choices, but my reasons have evolved over time.

I have always considered myself to be a passionate environmentalist, and I knew from previous studies that plant-based diets cut our carbon footprints drastically. I finally felt as though I was doing something effectively good for my planet. I also began to realize the absurdity of carnivorous diets, of drinking milk from other animals, or killing something in such excess that we don’t even see the horror of it anymore. I didn’t want to feel detached anymore.

I have never felt limited on a vegan diet. I have never felt restricted or like I’m missing something. All I want to do is be able to show people that this lifestyle is truly limitless, in every way.

Why cooking?

My background has always been in the arts. My family and I are very musical people, and I actually have a long history with performing. For me, cooking has become a way of self expression that reminds me of the feeling of performing. There’s so much integrity in preparing a full meal, with personality and respect for our ingredients. We live in a world that tells us we have no time or money for anything, and cooking has been pushed aside for take-out, restaurants, and pre-made meals. I believe every meal is important, and every meal deserves attention. I want to be able to share recipes that are simple and cheap, but still insight a feeling of pride and respect for food.

‘Cause food’s life, ya know?
